Monday morning’s coastal storm did a number on Westport Point, causing widespread beach erosion and cobbling, damage to East Beach Road and floodwaters that inundated the point all the way north to lower Main Road.

The storm brought strong southwest winds and torrential rain, and the situation came to a head at noon’s high tide. Harbormaster Chris Leonard spent the morning at the marine services shack at the point, and was keeping an eye on boats that might be tied down too tightly for the high water — “so far, nobody’s gone over yet,” he said. By early afternoon, the biggest damage he heard about was a dock that came loose and floated away, but was recovered within an hour or two.

The fire and highway departments closed off the worst of East Beach Road, which was severely damaged in a similar storm two days before Christmas last year. That storm forced the closure of the Gooseberry Island causeway for months, and required extensive asphalt repairs along the roadway over the winter. It was too early to tell the extent of the damage Monday before dark, town administrator James Hartnett said.
