The Barrington High School girls soccer team upset second-seeded LaSalle Academy in the Division I quarterfinals on Friday night, Nov. 1.
The Eagles and Rams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation, and the two teams remained knotted through overtime, forcing penalty kicks. That is when Barrington, the number seven seed entering the playoffs, pulled away from LaSalle.
Barrington’s Lena Pilipski buried her penalty kick first, and LaSalle kept pace with a goal.
Ava Caldarone was next and she netted another goal for the Eagles.
Then BHS goalie Zoe Dyer made the save of the season — she dove to her left, stretched out as far as possible and blocked the LaSalle kick. That gave Barrington a 2-1 advantage in PKs.
“Zoe had been pulling off great penalty saves all week in practice,” said Barrington High School Coach Martyn Hollands. “We were hopeful she would come up big in the game if necessary, and she did!”
Bailey Duncan’s penalty kick gave Barrington a 3-1 edge. LaSalle scored next, but Mackenzie Lema gave the Eagles a 4-2 lead, with only two shots remaining for the Rams. When LaSalle’s fourth attempt missed the net, Barrington exploded in celebration.
Liv Morrissette scored Barrington’s goal in regulation, finding the back of the LaSalle net at the 39-minute mark in the first half. LaSalle tied the score at the 60-minute mark.
Barrington will square off against third-seeded North Kingstown in the state semifinals. The game will be played at Rhode Island College’s Alumni Field on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m.
