Barrington girls win seventh straight state title

Eagles upset East Greenwich, 48-46

It was a Hollywood movie finish.

The Barrington High School girls swim team had trailed East Greenwich for the entire Division I State Championship meet on Sunday. In fact, Barrington was trailing by two points heading into the final event of the meet, and needed to have one BHS team win the 400 free relay and another finish third in order to overtake the lead.

But after the first three legs of the relay, the Eagles were still trailing. That’s when Zoe Webster entered the pool.

Behind by a half-body length, Webster quickly started to cut into the Avengers’ lead.

“After the first 50, she cut the lead in half,” said Barrington High School coach Sandy Gorham. “She chipped away, chipped away, chipped away.”

As Webster came out of the final turn, East Greenwich’s lead had all but disappeared. Members of the Barrington High School swim team ran the length of the pool screaming for Webster.

“It was deafening,” Coach Gorham said, adding “She (Webster) came even and then she just stretched the stroke out… She touched the girl out.”

The Eagles erupted in celebration, and a few seconds later Barrington’s second relay team in the event finished third. The comeback was complete — Barrington had won its seventh straight state championship. In the end, the Eagles outscored the Avengers 48-46.

“It was a whole different format… but they came through,” Coach Gorham said of his team.

Coach Gorham praised his entire team’s effort. He said his swimmers faced challenges all season long — they had a late start to the season, their training schedules had to be adjusted, the meet formats shortened rest time in between events. Coach Gorham said Barrington tapered for the semifinals playoff meet against LaSalle, knowing they needed to perform very well to knock off the Rams. The Eagles defeated LaSalle and then worked to hold onto the taper for the finals against East Greenwich.

“It was hard, physically and psychologically,” Coach Gorham said.

In the finals, Barrington’s 200 medley relay team of Liza Zhukov, Kristen Baker, Garin Stone and Emma DiGiacomo opened the meet with a second place finish. Webster followed that with a second place finish in the 200 free, and Baker grabbed third in the 200 IM.

In the 50 free, Rachael Baker gave Barrington its first win of the meet, while DiGiacomo finished third.

Stone won the 100 fly and Emma Bell finished third in the same event. In the 100 free, Webster finished first and Rachael Baker finished right behind her in second. Nellie Peachier was third in the 500 free.

In the 200 free relay, Stone, DiGiacomo, Rachael Baker and Webster powered to a first place finish while Bell, Anne Sweeney, Meghan McDermott and Noelle Robinson finished third.

Maude Montross-Smith and Zhukov finished second and third, respectively in the 100 backstroke. Kristen Baker won the 100 breaststroke and Michelle Xian was third in that event, setting up the dramatic finish in the 400 free relay.
