Barrington High School also qualifies for O’Day Fleet Racing Championship

The Barrington High School sailing team will compete in the National Invitational Tournament in Norfolk, Va. this weekend.

Barrington recently finished first overall at the New England School Sailing Association Team Racing Terk Championship in Boston, Mass. The local sailors were ranked ninth entering the event, and won with a 12-2 record.

In addition, Barrington High School also finished first overall at the O’Day Fleet Racing Championship qualifier against 12 teams from the Southern New England district. That win qualified BHS for the championship at Connecticut College later this month.

“In recent years the BHS team has had a few really strong sailors who train all year round and compete outside of high school sailing at high levels,” wrote Barrington High School Sailing Coach Benjamin Chwalk in a message to the Barrington Times. “This year is equally as strong as it has been in the past few years. They are a young team with freshmen and sophomore skippers.

“The team continues to develop sailors each season with everyone sailing stronger by the end of each year. Our goal is to finish in the top half of the NIT."

The Barrington High School roster includes skippers Duffy Macaulay, a sophomore, and freshmen Ben Reuter and Cal Naperotic, and crew Quin Schneider, Abby Guertler, and Lauren Leonard, all seniors, Ellery Kloc, a junior, and Kai Beland, a sophomore.

In addition to prepping for the National Invitational Tournament and the O’Day Fleet Racing Championship, Barrington High School is also rallying support from the community.

The team is accepting financial support — donations can be made via venmo, @Eagles-Sailing , or by check payable to BHS Sailing Club (to be dropped off at Barrington Yacht Club).
