Barrington Police: Flags stolen from veterans memorial

Monday, Aug. 15

A motorist stopped into the station to report a previous auto accident. No one was injured. 

Police received a 911 call for an accident on County Road in the area of Police Cove Park. No one was injured.

A Metropolitan Park Drive resident called police to report an abandoned bicycle. The resident said the bike had been left leaning against a fence outside his home for more than a week. Police seized the bike and brought it back to the station. 

Police responded to a two-vehicle accident that occurred on County Road. No one was injured.

A Linden Road resident called police to report an abandoned bicycle. The resident said the bike was left in the bushes near Linden Road. Police seized the bike.  

Tuesday, Aug. 16

An area animal hospital called police to report an animal bitten by another animal. Police said a dog was bitten on the side by another dog. The animal is up to date on its rabies vaccinations and received a booster while at the animal hospital. 

A resident stopped into the station to report an auto accident. The resident said her vehicle was damaged while parked outside a local business. 

A police officer on patrol spotted a teenager standing outside the railings on the While Church Bridge — police said it appeared the female teenager was going to jump off the bridge. The police officer approached the girl and spoke to her. Officials also contacted the girl’s parents, who responded to the scene. Police said EMTs transported the girl to a hospital. 

Two vehicles collided on the Wampanoag Trail in the area of County Road. No one was injured. 

Wednesday, Aug. 17

Police received a 911 call for an accident on County Road. No one was injured. 

Police received a report of a dog fight at the dog park at Haines. Police said two dogs were involved. The injured dog received a rabies booster.

A police cruiser’s windshield was damaged by flying debris while the vehicle was traveling on the Wampanoag Trail. 

Police conducted tobacco sales compliance checks with local businesses. Police worked with a 15-year-old boy who served as a decoy — the boy entered a total of four Barrington shops and tried to purchase tobacco products. Clerks at all four stores asked to see the boy’s ID and refused to sell the tobacco products to the underage individual. 

Police are investigating the larceny of three flags from a veterans memorial located near the intersection of the East Bay Bike Path and Bay Spring Avenue. Police said a US flag, RI flag, and POW/MIA flag were stolen some time late Sunday night into early Monday morning. Anyone with more information is asked to call the police at 437-3933. 

A woman called police to report that she was being assaulted by her 13-year-old daughter. Police said the incident occurred inside the woman’s vehicle. According to the police dispatch log, the girl attacked her mother while she was on the phone with police — she ripped out some of her hair and broke her glasses. Police and EMTs responded to the scene; EMTs later transported the girl to a hospital. Police said the argument started when the woman took away the girl’s electronic device. 

Thursday, Aug. 18

Police responded to Sowams Road near Sowams School at about 12:45 a.m. for a report of an injured raccoon. Police said it appeared the animal had been hit by a car and was badly injured. An officer euthanized the raccoon. 

Police received a call for an accident inside the Barrington Shopping Center. No one was injured. 

An official at the Rhode Island Department of Health called police to report a past dog bite incident — a man was riding his bike near Latham Park when a dog lunged at him and bit his calf, resulting in a puncture wound. 

Police received a call for an auto accident that occurred on County Road. No one was injured. 

A motorist stopped into the station and told police that his vehicle was damaged after he struck a pothole on the Wampanoag Trail. Police gave the motorist a DOT form to seek compensation for the damage. 

A Barrington resident told police that she received an email that stated someone else had been using her Social Security number. The resident said she spoke with an official at that agency and they instructed her to document the situation with police. 

Police received a 911 call about a suspicious condition at Latham Park at about 10:15 p.m. Police said a group of teenagers was threatening another group of teenagers. Police responded to the scene and spoke to the involved teenagers — police said the argument was verbal only and no one was charged. Police ordered the teens to leave the park. 

Friday, Aug. 19

A Middle Highway resident called police after she received a message from someone who stated they were with the US Postal Service and they were going to her residence to retrieve a package that had been delivered to her home by mistake. The resident said the call sounded suspicious and no package had been delivered to her home. She then decided to call police. 

A Barrington resident called police after she received a notice that her daughter’s Social Security number had been compromised. The resident wanted to document the situation with police. 

Police received a phone call for a missing Beaver Road resident after the man missed an appointment. Police issued a notice to surrounding agencies to be on the lookout for the resident, who was a 31-year-old male. Police also searched the surrounding area but did not find him. Police said the man later returned to his home. 

Police issued a summons to Melvin Colon Rodriguez, 47, of Riverside, for driving with expired license or without license-third or subsequent offense. Police had ordered Rodriguez’s vehicle over to the side of the road for allegedly speeding. 

A Pine Cone Drive resident’s cat suffered a wound of unknown origin. The cat was ordered to quarantine for 45 days and also received a rabies booster. 

Police responded to a Third Street home for an incident involving two resident’s pets. Police said one resident’s dog had attacked his neighbor’s cat, injuring the animal. Police said the situation escalated after one resident posted something online about the incident, which later led other people to write troubling comments about the dog involved. Police said the dog’s owner later stopped by the cat owner’s house and said something threatening. Police later issued a no trespassing order to that person for his neighbor’s property. 

Police responded to an accident that occurred on County Road. No one was injured. 

A motorist stopped into the station to report a vandalism incident. The man told police he parked his car in the Barrington Shopping Center and when he returned to it later on, he noticed a wiper was bent up. 

Saturday, Aug. 20

A 19-year-old woman from West Greenwich stopped into the station to report a past sexual assault. The woman said the assault took place in 2018. She identified the alleged suspect as a Barrington resident. Police are investigating. 

Two vehicles collided near the intersection of Maple Avenue and County Road. No one was injured. 

Police received a 911 call for a vehicle that drove onto a resident’s property and struck a utility trailer. Police said the motorist reported that her vehicle’s brakes failed. 

Sunday, Aug. 21

A Barrington resident stopped into the station to report a domestic situation. She told police she had an altercation with her boyfriend. Police said there was no evidence of a crime; the argument had been verbal only. 

A motorist called police after noticing damage to her vehicle. The woman said she parked her car in the Barrington Shopping Center and when she returned later she noticed fresh marks on her bumper. 

A Boxwood Court resident stopped into the station after he discovered some checks he had written had been altered. The resident said he wrote four checks to pay some bills, which he mailed in the US Post Office mail boxes in the Barrington Shopping Center and on Rumstick Road. Police said it appears someone had taken the envelops from the mailboxes, altered the checks and then cashed them. Police were going to speak with officials from the USPS.

Two vehicles collided near the intersection of Middle Highway and Primrose Hill Road. No one was injured.
