BHS Sports Roundup: Barrington blasts Narragansett, 20-2

Eagles open early lead and cruise to victory

The Barrington High School girls lacrosse team sprinted past Narragansett 20-2 in a game at Victory Field last Wednesday, May, 26.

Tess Gagliano finished with five goals and an assist, while Ava Kovolyn scored three goals, Charlotte Danyla had one goal and four assists, Julia Stanchina had five assists, Kate Robertson had two goals and two assists, Violet Gagliano had a goal and two assists, and Reilly Curran, Emma Johnson and Alex Hope each scored twice.

The Eagles (6-2) have been dominating the competition recently — prior to defeating Narragansett handily, Barrington beat Cumberland 25-1 and Mt. Hope 17-2.

Barrington is scheduled to play at East Greenwich on Thursday.

Baseball

The Eagles improved to 8-2 after defeating North Smithfield 12-3 in a league game on Monday afternoon at Barrington High School.

Harry Turner had three hits and drove in three runs, Gabe Tanous had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Ned Shapiro, Aaron Brady and JT Celico each finished with two hits. Meanwhile, Andy Fletcher pitched well for the Eagles, striking out five North Smithfield hitters and allowing just two earned runs.

Barrington Coach Vin Scandura said he was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We’re getting better,” he said, adding that his team’s defense has been much-improved. “We’re taking care of the games we need to take care of. We haven’t played down to the competition, which is good.”

Barrington is now facing a stretch of games against some tough teams, including Rogers High School. The Eagles are scheduled to play against the Vikings on Thursday night at Cardines Field.

Girls track

Despite some poor weather conditions (cold, rain and wind), the Barrington High School girls track team managed to get some outstanding performances:

• Kyle Keough ran 68.7 sec in the second 400 meters of her 800-meter race (2:22.25) as she moved from sixth place (10 meters back) to a 10 meter lead to win the 800 race against strong competition. Meg Zitzmann ran well in the wind too, finishing fifth (2:26.13).

• Helen Copple set a new personal best in the 300-meter hurdles (52.92) to tie for fourth place.

• Seniors MacKenzie Stephens placed fourth in the hammer throw (133-feet 2-inches) and Meghan Coyne (123-feet 7-inches) placed eighth overall.

• The 4x100-meter relay of Courtney Brady, Helena DeFanti, Sophia Ford and Chelsea Duncan ran their best time of the year to place sixth. (54.91)

• Grace Saal placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and seventh in the long jump.

• Eva Garofano set a new personal best in the pole vault (7-feet) placing eighth and finished eighth in the discus as well, just missing the finals.

• The 4x800-meter relay of Olivia Johnson, Maeve Murphy, Maria Gunness and Virginia Sanderson placed sixth.

Boys track

The Eagles ran well at the St. Germain Invitational in West Warwick on May 29. Will Sanchez finished third in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump, while Jackson Duffy was third in the 110-meter hurdles. Nico Arce finished third in the 200-meter race, and fourth in the 400-meter race. Duffy, Sanchez, Thomas McAdams and Jackson O’Connor ran to a sixth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay race.

Boys tennis

The Barrington High School boys tennis team ran its record to 6-0 with a pair of 7-0 wins last week — the Eagles defeated East Greenwich on the road and topped Lincoln High School at home.
