As the sounds of “Chirp,” “Tweet,” “Coo,” “Caw,” and other bird songs multiply each day, spring rolls in like a natural wake-up call as the sun slowly rises — the perfect time to celebrate the migration of birds. One place dedicated to honoring this magical moment in the season is Norman Bird Sanctuary. 

The soulful, rock’n’roll sounds of local Newport singer-songwriter Mel may drift into the background as visitors take part in guided bird walks offered every half hour at this event, learning from experts about the birds they hear and see — ideal for all levels, even beginners. Expect to hear the “Chirp” of a Tree Swallow or the “Cheep” of an Osprey (and many more)! 

Before or after the bird walk, visitors are welcome to enjoy a light breakfast with coffee, tea, and juice; explore local vendor booths — including Charter Books, Maggie's Healing Path, and Simply Stones; or attend an educational Hawk Talk led by Norman Bird Sanctuary educators, featuring a rehabilitated Red-tailed Hawk. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the essential role birds of prey play in the local ecosystem. 

Kids will have full access to the interactive curiosity lab, a puppet theater, magnification station, scientific illustration, and more. Bird-themed crafts will also be available, including a special opportunity sponsored by Bruno Painting to decorate and take home a wooden birdhouse as a souvenir from the magical celebration of birds. 

Spring Migration Celebration will be held on May 17, 2025 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Norman Bird Sanctuary, located at 583 Third Beach Road in Middletown. Ticket prices are as follows: $25 adult member, $20 child member, $30 adult non-member, $25 child non-member, and free for children under the age of three.
