Renovated park features new basketball, pickle-ball and tennis courts

Barrington officials, and a fair number of sports fans, celebrated the grand opening of the new Chianese Park sports complex.

At a special event on Saturday, Oct. 28, people checked out the new tennis, pickle-ball, and basketball courts at Chianese Park. There was an official ribbon-cutting, a free-throw shooting contest for kids, and even some exhibition pickle-ball matches featuring Barrington Town Manager Phil Hervey.

The town began the Chianese Park renovation project months ago. The project cost about $250,000, and the town covered the tab with money from a Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management grant and American Rescue Plan Act funding.

Hinding Tennis, LLC, of Branford, Conn., completed the project. The company also built the new tennis/pickle-ball courts on Kent Street.

At Chianese, the new complex is a big change from the previous courts. The new facility features a full-size basketball court that is separated by a large group of pickle-ball courts. There is also a new tennis court. The entire playing surface — a bright blue and green asphalt layout — is surrounded by new vinyl-covered chainlink fence.
