The Barrington High School field hockey team opened its season with an impressive 2-1 win over East Greenwich at home on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

East Greenwich entered the game as the two-time defending state champion, and took an early 1-0 lead against the Eagles. But Barrington battled back, scoring on a penalty stroke to tie the game and then taking the lead about a minute later.

Vivienne Mueller, a senior captain for the Eagles, scored on the penalty stroke, placing a shot in the upper corner of the Avengers’ goal. She also assisted on the go-ahead score, pushing a pass to teammate Peyton Whittet who found the back of the goal.

“They were so happy and so proud,” Barrington coach Anne Gasbarro said of her team following the win. “They knew they could do it. They had put in the work.”

Coach Gasbarro said members of her team worked very hard in the offseason, and have impressed her. The Eagles entered the season with eight returning players and eight girls who are new to varsity.

“The team chemistry is amazing,” Coach Gasbarro said.

The Eagles knew they would face a tough test in the opener — the Avengers are the defending state champs and finished the prior season undefeated. Coach Gasbarro said her team started out the game playing very well, but slumped for a few minutes and allowed East Greenwich to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles bounced back from the momentary lapse and competed hard against the Avengers the rest of the way.

Coach Gasbarro praised the play of her entire team, and made special mention of the defensive unit. She said juniors Abby Martel and Amy Labelle, sophomore Chelsea Duncan, and senior captain Nora Greene all played well. Coach Gasbarro said Violet Gagliano also played a key role in the Eagles’ victory.

“She had an outstanding performance,” Coach Gasbarro said. “She played a crucial part in our success.”

Barrington goalie Juliet McGee, a sophomore, finished the game with one save.

Coach Gasbarro is entering her third year as head coach of the field hockey team. She coaches both the varsity and junior varsity teams, as there is no JV coach currently.

Barrington is scheduled to play at LaSalle on Saturday.
