Claire McTaggart finishes second in girls results

The Barrington High School golf team finished tied for fifth at the RIIL golf state championship last week, at Cranston Country Club.

The Eagles, who finished atop the East Division in the regular season, fired a 630 for the two-day tournament.

LaSalle Academy won the state title with a final score of 613, well ahead of second place Moses Brown (627), third place East Greenwich (628), fourth place Prout School (629), and the two fifth-place teams: Barrington and Bishop Hendricken.

The Eagles had two players finish near the top in the girls individual results — Claire McTaggart was second with a two-day total of 158, while Lily Dessel was fourth at 162. Moses Brown’s Adriana Eaton won the individual title with a low total of 141.

Mitch McTaggart had the low score among the boys on the Barrington High School golf team. Mitch first a 75 on the first day and an 80 on the second day, for 155. (A LaSalle golfer fired a 149 to win the tournament. The top six players finished with scores ranging from 149 to 153.)

Rocco DiMatteo was second for Barrington. DiMatteo fired 78s on both days to finish at 156. Claire McTaggart finished with a 158, which included a 74 on the first day of the tournament.

Dessel fired 81 on both days and finished with 162, while Greg Fitta scored 83 on both days and finished at 168. Kevin Lockhart had an 87 on the first day and a 90 on the second day for a total of 177. Emma Lockhart had an 84 on the first day and missed the cut.

“I’m very proud of how we performed at states,” wrote Barrington High School Coach Coale Kazounis. “We didn't place where we wanted to but I'm very happy with how everyone played! Considering the difficulty of the course conditions on Day 2, we competed well amongst other teams, and were four shots outside of a second place team finish. Just a few shots away from a very different team finish!”

Kazounis said Claire McTaggart and Dessel both earned First Team All State honors. The BHS coach said the season was full of highlights.

“It was a great season for the Eagles overall,” Kazounis said. “We were able to win the East Division again with a 13-0-1 record. We had some great match scores, including a 143 (34, 36, 36, 37) at Crestwood Country Club in April, which was our lowest team score since I began coaching in 2023!”

Kazounis said Dessel successfully defended her individual girls title at the Hendricken Invitational with a 76, edging out Claire McTaggart, who shot a 77.

“There was lots of success to be proud of in 2025 and I'm excited for the future with the current players we have,” Kazounis said. “We'll be practicing and preparing this offseason for a successful 2026.”
