Kiley leads Tiverton’s offensive onslaught as Tigers crush Davies, 11-1

Posted

Senior shortstop Mackenzie Kiley drove in three runs on two hits and scored two runs, to lead the Tiverton softball team over Davies, 11-1, during a home game on Tuesday afternoon. The win evened their D-III record at 1-1. The Tigers bashed 11 hits and ended the game, via 10 run rule, in the 5th inning. Emily Oakes and Mikayla Andrews each drove in a two runs and had two hits each. Avery Couto and Sam Bettencourt also had a pair of hits during the offensive deluge.

"This was an important game for us,” said Tigers head coach Cory Motta. “We needed this one. The team played well in the opener and dropped a tough one in extra innings. It took us a little while to get going offensively, but Abigail kept Davies in check and gave us time. It was a good team win, everyone played well today.”

Freshman pitcher, Abigail DeMello, struck out 5 batters in 5 innings, with just 1 earned run and 1 walk, in her pitching debut for the Tigers. “Abby came up huge for us,” Coach Motta said. “She just pounded the strike zone, stayed composed and really pitched a great game.”

Having DeMello pitch well was helpful for Tiverton. The team was able to rest Grace Plourde, who pitched seven and a third innings, in the Tigers extra-innings loss on Friday. Plourde left the game after tugging at her arm in the eighth. She struck out 10 and is the team’s number one starter.

“Davies had some real good hitters in their lineup,” said Coach Motta, “Abby really stepped up and got us the win. I am very proud of her. She gave us exactly what we needed."

Davies scores first

In the first inning Davies scored their lone run and threatened to score more, loading the bases on DeMello. With one out, Tigers third baseman, Avery Couto, saved the day, diving into foul territory to make the catch, for the second out. "That may have been the biggest play of the game, defensively,” said Coach Motta. “We were in trouble. That diving catch on that foul ball was huge. Avery is so important to this team. She brings energy and competes on every play.”

With two out and the bases loaded, Demello promptly struck out the next batter to get out of the inning with out any further damage.

Offense heats up

Davies took their 1-0 lead into the third inning. "Their pitcher did a great job of challenging us,” said Coach Motta.

The bats began to heat up in the bottom of the third. Kiley, the team’s shortstop and leadoff hitter, walked, stole second and moved to third on a bunt by Grace Plourde. Couto walked and stole second base to put runners on second and third. Emily Oakes who had homered in the Tigers first game, laced a single to drive in Kiley to tie the score, 1-1. Oakes stole second to put runners on second and third again for Mikayla Andrews. The senior second baseman smacked a two-run single to score both runners, for a Tigers 3-1 lead.

“Mikayla delivered the biggest hit of the game,” Coach Motta said. "That was huge. It gave us a little breathing room and some momentum, offensively. We were able to settle down after that and hit the ball hard.”

Mikayla Downey, Sam Bettencourt, and Paige Peace Fortin all followed with hits as the Tigers ran out to a 6-1 lead.

“Our base running was the bright spot,” said Coach Motta. “We are starting to get a little better in that area of the game.”

More runs in the 5th

The Tigers scored 5 more runs in the 5th inning to end the game under the league’s 10 run rule. Emma Beaudoin led off the inning with a single. Pinch runner, Sam Bettencourt, stole second base and scored on a beautiful bunt by Morgan Rodriques. Davies threw the ball away and Bettencourt safely crossed the plate. Leadoff hitter Mackenzie Kiley stepped to the plate and bashed a double to score Rodriques and start the Tigers hitting onslaught. Plourde doubled to plate Kiley. Couto hit a triple to drive in Plourde. Oakes hit her second single to score Couto for the Tigers 11th run and end the game.

Notes

“After the first inning we settled down,” Coach Motta said. The team played pretty clean defensively. I thought our outfield had a great day.”

“Bettencourt, Rodriques, and Oakes all played well and made big plays,” said Coach Motta. “They were on the money with all of their cuts. They held runners, and cut two Davies baserunners down.”

“Our defensive star of the game though, was third baseman, Avery Couto,” said Coach Motta.

Couto had three spectacular plays in the field. “That was really big for us,” Coach Motta said. Avery got us out of innings and saved runs.”
