Letter: Budget process requires balancing priorities, collaborating

To the editor:

My name is Susie Holloway. I am running for a position on the committee on appropriations and I would be grateful for your vote at the election on Wednesday, June 16, which will be held in person at the high school at the end of the Financial Town Meeting beginning at 7 p.m.

It is important to me to help strengthen our community as an interconnected network of neighbors and friends. I am a member of the Barrington Interfaith Partners which has representatives from our many different houses of worship who are dedicated to making Barrington a welcoming community.

I was born and raised in Providence, but lived for many years in North Carolina where I served as a member of the board of directors on Chapel Hill’s local water and sewer authority. For many years I also worked as a lawyer in the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office representing state agencies, boards, and commissions. While serving on the water and sewer authority, I worked with my fellow board members each year to approve the utility’s budget, which included balancing the need for capital improvements and personnel salaries with the impact of potential rate increases on the public. The town budget process, likewise, requires balancing priorities and is a close collaboration between the taxpayers and their representatives. The budgeting process lies at the heart of our democratic form of government. Respecting each of us as a neighbor and a friend strengthens our democracy. I have a master’s degree in social work, as well as a law degree. I will bring a collaborative approach to our town’s budget process if given the opportunity to serve on the committee on appropriations. Thank you for your consideration. I would be honored to have your vote. I look forward to seeing everyone at the FTM on June 16 at the high school at 7 p.m.

Sincerely,

Susie Holloway
