Letter: Some more ways for worried locals to take action

Posted

To the editor:

We much appreciated the list of local organizations included in the May 1 letter by Roz Moulton, “Antidote to Despair”. We are also very grateful for the many suggestions for becoming active at local and state levels.

May I add a suggestion that this spring, Rhode Islanders can find many beautiful places to construct community outdoors.

Take your activities and creativity outside and invite people to share, talk and learn something new. Right on the sidewalk or from your front steps, or in parks, on bike paths and hiking trails, along the shores, or beside the Bay, the people of the Ocean State are ready to celebrate the fresh air and sunshine that we in New England have been waiting for.

May I also add a few ideas for activating your voice at the national level:

1. Call the US Capitol at (202) 224-3121 or (202) 225-3121. Leave a message of support or disapproval for ANY Representative or Senator. A full list of ALL Senators is found at senate.gov and ALL Representatives at congress.gov/members.

2. Support the history of MANY Americans at the US Postal Service by purchasing stamps that recognize the MANY accomplishments of federal workers, medical workers, farmers, builders, teachers, people of color, women, veterans, artists, scientists, etc.

3. Spend your money with intention. Give the most attention to those organizations that you support and boycott those you oppose.

Thank you for keeping us informed about so many opportunities in our local community.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
