I’d like to propose a bona fide solution to Barrington’s financial issues. At last, a guaranteed fix to generate substantial income for our tax-stressed town.
Raise taxes? No.
Increase, yet again, property values? Nope.
I propose that we situate police patrols, 24/7 with radar guns in hand, on Middle Highway, from the bike path up to the Nayatt Road. Issue speeding tickets to all motorists that blatantly disobey the 25 mph speed limit. Mind you, I’m not talking about those traveling 5 or even 10 mph over the speed limit, but more like 15, 25 and yes, even the many who travel in excess of 30 mph over the posted speed limit - those motorists who feel the need for speed on a straight-away roadway that provides an ideal outlet for such reckless behavior.
My goodness, this would generate enough income whereby all Barrington residents may not have to pay property taxes ever again! [And if you really want to fatten the piggy bank, throw a few 24/7 patrols onto Maple Avenue for the same purpose.]
Middle Highway is not safe for pedestrians, our precious wildlife and/or other speed-limit-abiding citizens. Perhaps if our patrolmen weren’t so busy dealing with unruly adolescents, they could focus more on keeping our roads safe. And generate revenue for our town at the same time. Win-win solution!
Respectfully,
Linda Bruscato
