Police investigating threatening message found at Barrington High School

Superintendent: Police department will provide additional presence at BHS

Barrington Police had a heavy presence at Barrington High School on Monday afternoon, Dec. 13, after a student there found a threatening message written in a girls’ bathroom.

The message, which appeared to be written on a wall or stall door, threatens a shooting at the school on 12/21/21. It appears that the message initially included the date 12/20/21, but then was written over.

Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore said officials have confirmed that the message was written on Monday, Dec. 13. Mr. Messore and BHS Principal Joe Hurley issued similar statements to parents of Barrington High School students.

“All threats are taken seriously. The Barrington Police Department, in conjunction with high school administration, will continue to monitor the situation actively. Out of an abundance of caution, the Barrington Police Department will provide an additional presence at BHS until the Winter Recess.”

During a phone interview on Monday afternoon, Mr. Messore said that police officers were reviewing video footage and actively investigating the incident. He said a student at the high school noticed the message in the bathroom earlier Monday and immediately alerted school officials to the situation.

“The Barrington Police Department is conducting a full investigation and encourages students and adults to report any information related to this incident,” Mr. Messore wrote in the statement. “The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. Please contact the Barrington Police Department or Barrington High School if you have any additional information.”

Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia also issued a press release.

“… we ask that parents speak to and actively listen to their children who may have knowledge of the matter,” the press release stated. “If anyone becomes aware of any information that may be helpful, please contact the School Department or the Police Department (401-245-5000 ex1 messorem@barringtonschools.org or Barrington Police Department 401-437-3935) immediately.

“As a note, it is best to err on the side of caution by making us aware of any information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem. Secondly, if you live in town and own a firearm, please physically account for it today and ensure it is stored safely and securely, in accordance with state law.”
