TIVERTON — Firefighters from Tiverton and surrounding towns battled a raging brush fire for four hours Sunday in the woods off Christopher Avenue — roughly between Ranger School and the Tiverton Industrial Park.
The alarm sounded just before 3 pm, the department said, and firefighters arrived to find fire moving quickly through the undergrowth driven by a westerly wind toward Route 24.
The fire singed 55 acres of land but did not damage any houses. One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat related issues. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Crews from 17 departments helped fight the fire or provide water or other assistance. Among them were Westport, Portsmouth, Little Compton, Fall River, Bristol, Warren, Middletown, Swansea, Freetown, Dartmouth (three districts), Rehoboth, Lakeville, Dighton, Rochester, RI Forest Management, Massachusetts Forestry, and the Providence Canteen.
Smoke could be seen from Aquidneck Island.
