Officials at Barrington High School decided not to offer Unified Volleyball during the Fall II sports season, which started recently and concludes in a little more than a month.

Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore said the decision was made by school officials more than a month ago, and said there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the guidance from state officials. Mr. Messore said at times the guidance offered by the Rhode Island Department of Health may not fit smoothly with guidance from the CDC. At times, he said, local school officials have been more cautious than some state and federal agencies.

“We’ve been very precautious,” Mr. Messore said. “When you’re responsible for children and people, I’d rather err on the side of caution.”

Barrington High School is offering football, cheerleading and girls volleyball during the Fall II sports season, and about a dozen other high schools in Rhode Island, including East Providence, Portsmouth, East Greenwich and South Kingstown, are offering Unified Volleyball currently.

Mr. Messore said the high school will also offer Unified Basketball during the spring sports season.

“It’s a good opportunity to get Unified back,” he said.
