EAST PROVIDENCE — While the City Council was considering changing the ordinance around qualifications for new police officer recruitment last week, the administration was also beginning its latest call for potential firefighters.
The department is seeking to hire as many as 24 new members, depending on if it receives federal SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grant funding (provided by the Federal Emergency Management Administration), or at least eight-10 probationary staff over the next year.
The application period began on June 14 and runs through Friday, July 30. New firefighters/emergency medical technicians hired can expect to earn between $55,477-$66,276.

The job description is as follows: “Perform skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; in rendering medical assistance at medical and other emergency scenes; and in operating and maintaining Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and work environment.”
The minimum requirements to apply are: Must be at least 21 years of age by July 30th, 2021; Must be a United States Citizen, and furnish a birth certificate or certificate of naturalization; Must possess and furnish a copy of valid driver’s license; Must possess a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); Successful completion of the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs Physical Performance Assessment (PPA) (PPA certifications obtained within one year of the application end date will be accepted); Must be able to obtain Rhode Island Emergency Medical Technician Basic Certification while attending the East Providence Fire Academy.
Candidates will be asked to complete written and oral tests, weighted at 60 and 40 percent, respectively, towards their grade. The minimum passing score required on both examinations is 70 points.
As is being proposed among the changes to the police recruitment guidelines, firefighter/EMT candidates can add to their scores for such as: current resident candidates may receive one point for each consecutive year that such candidate has been a resident of the city up to a maximum of five points; veteran-candidates may receive four points or five points for a post-9/11 veteran-candidate, up to a maximum of five points.
