Huskies nab another boys' volleyball victory
Mt. Hope baseball, girls' lacrosse sides suffer setbacks
Coming off its best win to date in the still young 2025 season, a 3-2 victory on the road over Division II Juanita Sanchez, the Mt. Hope High School boys' volleyball team opened the new week with a 3-0 triumph over St. Raphael in a D-III match.
The Huskies improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the league by sweeping the Saints 25-16, 25-11 and 25-16. Jacob Betres had five kills, three service aces and nine digs for the locals. Gianfranco Semerora-Bellanca had six kills and six blocks. Jackson Gould had a night-best eight kills.
"The scores weren't indicative of how (St. Ray's) played. They're tough. They have very strong blockers. Fortunately we covered the block well," said MHHS head coach Lisa Lunney.
"I was a little worried coming off that Juanita win that we could come out flat. We needed a good night," she added.
The Huskies took the rest of the spring vacation week off from league play. They were set to return to D-III action Tuesday night, April 22, in Providence against Achievement First.
Baseball
The Mt. Hope baseball nine dropped its fourth game to start the 2025 Division I season after falling to Portsmouth, 10-4, to begin the last week.
As has been their wont so far this spring, the Huskies took an early lead, 1-0, but could not hold the advantage. The Patriots scored three times in the third to move out on front. The locals did match that in the bottom of the frame, however Portsmouth scored four more in the fourth then added two in the fifth to take control of the contest.
Trace Dubois had two hits and drove in a run for the Huskies. Colin Padovich, Andy Charest and Brian Abbruzzi each had a hit and a RBI. Trace Dubois, Abbruzzi, Rhys Davies and Logan Dubois scored the Mt. Hope runs.
Girls' lacrosse
The Mt. Hope girls' lacrosse group fell to 13-6 to Burrillville to begin the last week of Division II play. The loss left the locals at 0-4 at the time.
Adriana Botelho paced the Huskies with two goals and three assists. Grace Zamil also found the net twice and assisted on another. Lola Silva and Margaret Thorp had one goal each. Nadia Albritton (10 saves) and Stella Hill (one) split time in the Mt. Hope cage.
