The Mt. Hope High School swim teams returned to their home pool PODS in East Providence Thursday night, Jan. 16, where the Huskies swept their respective Division III meets against the visiting Blackstone Valley Prep-Central Falls co-op.
The Mt. Hope boys continued to set the pace atop the league dual meet standings with a perfect 4-0 mark following their 67-22 victory. The Mt. Hope girls upped their duals record to 4-1 with their 59-30 triumph, trailing only unbeaten East Providence (4-0) on the D-III ladder.
The night was marked by several impressive individual performances by the Huskies, who set new program and personal records in their events or who posted state meet qualifying times.
"Both teams are constantly surprising me. There is a competitive nature to this group that is elevated from previous teams. They want to win both individually and as a team and they are vocal about it," Mt. Hope head coach Kasey Carr said of the Huskies' efforts last Thursday night.
She continued, "The team has a lot of talent, but they also have an incredible collective work ethic. I’m thrilled to be seeing so many personal bests and I hope we can keep the ball rolling into championship season."
The Huskies have a few more meets prior to the dawn of the championship meet season, which begins with the Division III championships on February 15.
Against the BVP-CF co-op a week ago, the boys won 9 of the 11 swims contested, starting with a time of 1 minute, 54.42 seconds in the 200 yard medley relay by Kieran Riedl, Cohen Ferreira, Finn Pansa and Sam Coles.
The same quartet bookended the evening by closing the meet with a new program record time of 3:50.91 to capture the 400 free relay.
Coles opened the solo events with a winning time of 2:07.77 in the 200 freestyle. Jackson Howland won the 50 free in 28.34 then the 100 free in 1:07.61. Pansa followed with a time of 5:27.29 to claim the 500 free.
Howland, Mac Marston, Max Silva and Liam Gagner took the mid-meet 200 free relay in 2:02.8.
In between, Coles won the 100 backstroke in 1:06.47 and Ferreira finished off the individual events with a winning time of 1:10.21 in the 100 breaststroke.
The times of Coles in the back, Howland in the 50 free, Ferreira breast as well as that of Reidl in the same event were new PRs for each. Gagner also set a new PR while swimming second in the 100 butterfly.
Solo swims by Jessica Deal, Emma Quigley and Olivia Taylor highlighted the girls' individual results.
Deal posted state meet qualifying times of 2:13.9 to win the 200 free and also in her second-place swim behind victorious teammate Taylor, who won the 100 free in 58.39. Quigley dropped a considerable 11 seconds off her personal best in the 500 free, winning in 6:23.31.
The same trio along with Bridget Courtney began the night with a winning swim of 2:13.8 in the 200 medley relay.
Taylor had her other win on the evening with a time of 2:26.91 in the 200 individual medley. Hazel Bradley won the 50 free in 29.62 before she, Summer Komiga, Vivian Goodman and Evelyn Towers took the mid-meet 200 free relay in 2:08.95.
The Huskies then closed the meet with a winning time of 4:18.38 by Bradley, Quigley, Deal and Taylor in the 400 free relay.
