Huskies thrill in come-from-behind 22-14 opening win

Bristol Warren's special teams, offense and defense combine to stifle Rogers after tough first quarter

The Mt. Hope Huskies made the most of their first time on the turf in 16 months, edging Rogers 22-14 Saturday afternoon with a solid come from behind performance highlighted by defensive prowess, quick thinking special teams play and some gritty offense.

Richard W. Dionne, Jr.
Brock Pacheco scores a touchdown for the Huskies to give Mt. Hope a 20-14 lead.

Though there were many outstanding individual performances, Head Coach TJ DelSanto said his big takeway was that the players worked as a true team, with everyone contributing and showing poise after a tough start.

"We got off to a slow start, but the kids played really well," he said. If we got down like that last year, I don't know that'd we come back from it. So it's really satisfying to see how our kids stepped up. It's nice as a coach to have that."

Playing on their temporary new home field at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown, the Huskies did indeed have a tough first quarter, going scoreless and giving up two touchdowns to Rogers before settling down and getting the job done.

After the first 15 minutes, it was nearly an all-Huskies show as they scored six points in the second quarter, eight in the third and their final eight with minutes to play, for the win.

Offense, defense and special teams came up big throughout, serving Rogers quarterback Max Newsome with two sacks, several forced fumbles and some hard tackles. In total, the Huskies yielded just six points over the last three quarters of the game.

AJ Brooks was named overall and defensive player of the game, Jordan Pompey earned special teams player of the game honors, and junior quarterback Aidan Ramaglia was the offensive player of the game. Also standing out was Brock Pacheco, a sophomore who had two big runs — one for a touchdown and another, with multiple broken tackles, for a two-point conversion in the second quarter."

"Last year, maybe we'd have one or two guys that would really stand out, but in this game, we had three different players score touchdowns," the coach said. "We had a really collective effort on defense, good play on offense and special teams — a lot of kids stepped up."

The Huskies' next game is scheduled for noon Saturday, when they take on old rivals Barrington at home.
