The Mt. Hope High School baseball team went countertrend in the early going of its 2025 Division I regular season en route to picking up its first league of the spring, 9-5, over host Pilgrim in Warwick Wednesday afternoon, April 16.
The Huskies, who have had a hard time holding early leads to date, found themselves down, 3-0, after one inning. Wednesday, though, the locals answered with one in the top of the second then exploded for five runs in the fourth to take the lead for keeps.
"It was an excellent team effort," said first-year MHHS head coach Josh Hunt, whose club improved to 1-4 in the D-I ranks. "After a shaky first inning a lot of teams may have just packed it in or gone through the motions. but the boys never wavered."
Jack Thompson and Trace Dubois each drove in a pair of Mt. Hope runs with one hit apiece. Rhys Davies and Collin Padovich had two hits and an RBI. Dubois and Brian Abbruzzi scored twice, the latter reaching base twice on a walk and a single.
Dubois picked up the victory on the mound after tossing three innings of shut-out ball in relief to close out the game. He struck out four.
"The energy on the team was great from the time they got on the bus," Hunt added. "Everybody played like they wanted to be the one to make the difference in the game whether it was in the field or at the plate and there wasn’t a weak spot in our lineup today because of that.
"They left no doubt and deserved this one today. I’m proud of the effort that these boys put out there this afternoon and am excited to build upon this."
The news wasn't so good Wednesday for the Mt. Hope softball team, which dropped its fifth game to begin its 2025 Division II slate, 18-0 to Burrillville.
The Broncos took immediate control of the contest, scoring eight times in the top of the first inning.
Sofia Haberman, Callie DaPonte, Madison Andrews and Emily Moran had a hit each for the locals.
