The Mt. Hope High School girls' basketball team saw its modest three-game winning run come to an end with a pair of non-league road losses in recent days as the Huskies fell to 6-5 overall.

Playing without ill starter Hailey Ferreira, the locals dropped a 45-34 decision against Division I St. Raphael in Pawtucket Monday night, Jan. 20.

The Huskies kept things close for the opening 16 minutes, trailing just 13-10 at the end of one and 21-20 at the break. The Saints, however, pulled away out of intermission, outscoring the locals by 10 (24-14) in the second half en route to the victory.

Lilly DeSilveira led Mt. Hope with a game-best 19 points. Emily Moran added 11.

The Huskies were coming off a 49-43 defeat to host West Warwick on January 17. Mt. Hope couldn't ever recover from falling behind 10-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Wizards built their largest lead (21-12) midway through the second period before the locals trimmed their deficit to 24-20 at the break.

The Huskies later stayed within a couple of possessions for the rest of the way, but weren't able to make a key shot or grab an important rebound down the stretch.

Mt. Hope trailed 37-31 at the end of three and closed to within one (44-43) with about 90 seconds to go, only to have West Warwick get two clutch caroms off their own misses, one leading to a free throw and the other to a layup, to secure the win.

DeSilveira again led the Huskies with a night and season-best 22 points. Moran added 16.

The previous evening, Mt. Hope rallied late after trailing for most of the night to visiting East Greenwich in a Division II outing, overcoming the Avengers for the 49-44 win. The Huskies improved to 5-2 in the league with the victory.

The guests led 23-20 at the intermission and 33-25 at the end of three quarters before the locals answered with a response in the final eight minutes. The Huskies used a 13-5 run to begin the fourth to take the lead, 38-37. Mt. Hope upped its edge to five, 44-39, with just under two minutes to go, then maintained the two-possession margin to the end of the contest.

Moran had a huge effort in leading the Huskies' rally with a season and career best 31 points. She had 11 field goals and went 9-for-15 from the free throw line. The senior center was especially effective in the fourth quarter response, scoring 20 of her points in the final frame.

Butterworth had a season-best 12 points, all in the first half as helped the locals stay within range. She made three twos and a pair of 3-pointers.
