Mt. Hope gymnasts place second at Regional Championship

The Mt. Hope gymnastics team placed second to Barrington at the Region I championship at the Newport County YMCA in Middletown on Sunday. The Huskies scored 133 as a team to Barrington’s 133.775. Portsmouth placed third with a score of 132.65,  Rogers/East Providence Co-op placed fourth with a score of 127.475 and Middletown placed fifth with a score of 126.85.

“Everyone stepped up tremendously,” said head coach Nicole Daniello. “Their focus was right on point. Assistant coach Courtney L'Heureux and I were so proud of all of them.”

Senior co-captain Reese Pavao led the team with her best an all around score of the season, a 34.4, with an 8.45 on vault, 8.6 on bars, 8.6 on beam and an 8.75 on floor.

“Reese has been such a strong competitor,” said Coach Daniello. “She has improved with each meet, adding skills like a front full on floor and with her execution. She has been remarkably consistent on beam. And has not fallen for two seasons in a row. She is a true team player who leads by example.”

The Huskies likely would have taken the meet if not for losing top gymnast, Nora Prendergast, who injured her ankle while participating on vault, the team’s first event. The senior captain still scored a team high 9.05 on vault and was able to participate on bars adding a scored of 7.7 to the team’s total. Prendergast was unable to participate on beam and floor.

Sophomore Caroline Nash also had a terrific meet for the Huskies with an all around score of 32.95. She scored an 8.55 on vault, 7.95 on bars, an 8.45 on beam and an 8.0 on floor. Her all around score was good enough to qualify the young gymnast for the individual state meet.

Senior Brooke Ramella also qualified for the state meet on floor and vault. Ramella posted an all around score of 32.95, with an 8.65 on vault, a 7.15 on bars, an 8.75 on beam and an 8.4 on floor.

“Caroline and Brooke nailed their routines and had their best meets of the season,” said Coach Daniello. “They performed so well on all their events and came up strong for the team.”

Maria Tucciarone added new skills to her routines to score a 8.55 on vault, a 7.6 on beam and an 8.25 on floor.

“Maria was amazing,” Coach Daniello said. “She competed a full on floor beautifully.”

Sophomore Avery Furtado scored a 6.7 on bars and a 6.6 on beam for the Huskies. Freshman Madeleine St. Pierre scored a 3.35 on bars and a 6.75 on beam. Senior Angel Bzdula scored a 7.35 on floor and Thalyta Pereira scored a 5.3 on floor.
