Local business owner steps up on ‘Thank a Police Officer Day’

Bristol’s George Adams had a plan up his sleeve all along.

The congenial owner of Levi’s Oil Co. wanted to pay tribute to members of the Bristol Police in the worst way. Well, he finally got his wish this past Friday when he strolled into the local police station on Metacom Avenue bearing gifts.

In celebration of “National Thank A Police Officer Day,” which is usually held the third Saturday in September, Adams came loaded with two king-size grinders and a special cake in honor of the sacrifices that law enforcement personnel make every day.

Waiting patiently in line upon his arrival was Lt. Michael Vieira, who was all smiles when he saw what Adams had in his possession.

“George has always been a great supporter of the Bristol police and stated that sometimes we are not recognized for our efforts of ensuring that Bristol is one of the safest communities in the country,” Vieira said. “George has historically always given back to the community. You can often see his smiling face at community-based fundraising events, such as Bristol toy drives and Fourth of July festivities.”

A short time later, Chief Kevin Lynch was already warming his trademark thumbs-up sign in appreciation of Adams’ heart-felt gesture. It was a noontime treat for everyone in the building, with George setting the tone.

For the record, “Thank a Police Officer Day” — also known as “National Tell a Police Officer ‘Thank You’ Day” — celebrates police officers, with citizens letting them know how much they appreciate the work they do. Citizens may wish them a simple “thank you,” or may perform small acts of gratitude on their behalf, such as buying them a coffee. But, George Adams took it a step further.

“I found it necessary to do this for the members of our police department for everything that they do in this community,” he said. “I’ve lived in this town for 30 years, and I can’t tell you how proud I am of everything these people in this police department have done to help keep us safe every single day and night. This was just a small token of my appreciation.”

Police Chief Kevin Lynch acknowledged his appreciation as well for what Adams brought forward.

“My appreciation to him for recognizing the efforts of the officers,” he said. “I also remain indebted to the men and women, both sworn and civilian, for making a difference in the community. These officers value their relationship with the community and work extremely hard to deliver desired outcomes. Working in the Town of Bristol and meeting the residents and engaging with the community is so rewarding.”
