There’s something about Bristol's Mary Vieira

Long-time Bristol resident honored at special luncheon

Posted

It was a wonderful afternoon of pleasantries last Thursday at the Silver Creek Rehab and Healthcare Center, where resident Mary Vieira, accompanied by her devoted son, Stephen Vieira, were treated to a special luncheon.

Among those in attendance was Bristol Town Administrator Steve Contente, Fire Chief Michael A. DeMello, Bristol Police officers Sean Gonsalves and Angelo Greco, Municipal Operations Manager Eric Dickervitz, and Silver Creek Rehab and Healthcare Administrator Sharon Fusco.

Ms. Vieira, a lifelong Bristolian and 1955 graduate of Bay View Academy, has been a resident at Silver Creek since 2017, having previously resided on Union Street. She’s well-known throughout the community and could usually be seen attending many of the town events, including the Bristol Memorial Day Parade, Bristol Fourth of July Parade, and so many others.

Said Town Administrator Steve Contente, "It was good to catch up with Mrs. Vieira and Steve. They were a part of downtown Bristol for a long time, even during the years I worked downtown for the Bristol Police Dept. in uniform. I am also pleased that Administrator Sharon Fusco at Silver Creek Manor keeps the residents connected."

Now 86 years of age, Ms. Vieira interacts with so many other residents at the Healthcare Center, including her son, Stephen, 60, who never misses a beat when it comes to helping comfort his mom every single day.

With the police and fire department represented on this particular occasion, Ms. Vieira was in a state of gratitude.

“They are so wonderful,” she beamed. “The Police and Fire Department here in Bristol have been very kind to me and my son.”

Many people in town consider Mary a real blessing to the community.

“She is such a great person,” said Stacy Domingos. “Years ago she would drop off little goodies with coloring books and crayons to my son. And, when he was potty training, she would bring some character underwear and such. She’s always thinking about the kids.”

Other people have also commented on Mary’s unselfish contributions in providing birthday cakes and the like at special parties at the former Dunkin Donuts on Gooding Avenue.

Sharon Fusco agrees that Mary Vieria is special in so many ways.
“Mary loves her son, Bristol, ice cream, and she adores live music and activities,” she said. “She is proud to be Irish, even though her last name isn't.”

“Mary Vieira constantly tells me how much she loves Bristol and all of the leaders in the town,” added Ms. Fusco. “She states that Steve Contente has always gone out of his way to check on her. The police and fire always helped in the community and now they keep an eye out on her son. So, we decided to do this lunch to thank them.”
