Democrats sweep all races in East Providence

Posted

All Democratic candidates charged to victory, a new state representative made her inaugural election victory official, and one contested school committee seat came within just a couple percentage points during the 2024 Presidential Election in East Providence.

Most of the city’s representatives from the State Legislature and its Congressional representatives made an appearance at Myron J. Francis in the early evening hours as voters continued to stream in to cast their ballots, as an unseasonably warm sun set behind peacefully behind the school.

Over 20,000 voters showed out, with over half of them opting to vote early through mail ballots or during the early voting process (and that may be lower than the reality, as mail ballots might not all be counted yet).

President and statewide
The city overwhelmingly opted for Vice President Kamala Harris for president, by a margin of 11,863 (57.7%) over Donald Trump, who received 8,188 votes (39.8%).

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse secured re-election to his fourth term in the Senate, beating Patricia Morgan by nearly 5,000 votes in EP. Rep. Gabe Amo also trounced his Republican opponent, with Townies casting 11,963 votes in his favor over Republican candidate Allen Waters (6,370 votes).

Local representatives
At the Rhode Island State House, District 14 Senator Valarie Lawson secured re-election in an uncontested general after ousting Brian Coogan in the Democratic Primary. District 18 Senator Robert Britto and District 32 Senator Pamela Lauria faced no opponents in the primary or the general, securing re-election for their second terms.

State Rep. Katherine Kazarian (D-Dist. 63), who faced no opponent, secured re-election for her sixth consecutive term. Rep. Matthew Dawson (D-Dist. 64) also faced no challenger. Rep. Jennifer Boylan (D-Dist. 66) bested her Republican challenger, Janine Wolf, by a count of 1,505 to 1,204 (55.4% to 44.3%), winning re-election and a second term. Current East Providence School Committee Chair, Jenni Furtado, became East Providence’s newest representative for District 64 after beating Ashley Pereira in the Democratic Primary, and didn’t face a challenger on Tuesday.

School Committee
Two school committee seats (Ward 2 and Ward 3) went unopposed, with Antonio Desimas running against no challenger in Ward 2 and David Luiz running alone in Ward 3, replacing Jenni Furtado who won her bid for District 64 in the Rhode Island House of Representatives.

Ryan Queenan faced off against Charles Tsonos in Ward 1, and scored a convincing victory by a count of 2,679 to 1,440 (63.9% to 34.3%).

The closest race in East Providence went down in Ward 4 for school committee, where Jessica Beauchaine narrowly edged Chrissy Rossi by a count of 2,662 to 2,559 (50.4% to 48.4%).

Ballot Questions
East Providence voters approved Questions 2, 3, 4, and 5 by wide margins, and similarly voted down a proposal in Question 1 to hold a Constitutional Convention, by a count go 11,437 to 6,810. Those results matched up similarly to numbers statewide.
