The EPHS boys' cross country team raced to a win and a rare tie in a pair of Metropolitan Division outings held Monday, Sept. 16, over the 3.1-mile course on the grounds of Tiverton High. The Townies finished equal with Mt. Hope, 28-28, and edged next-door neighbor Providence Country Day, 24-34.
Mt. Hope junior Jackson Cicchinelli was the overall race winner with a time of 17 minutes, 57 seconds. PCD's Brady Jones followed in second at 18 flat. His Knights' teammate Leo Woodman was fourth in 18:57.
Townies finished in places three, five and six as Will Anthony clocked a 17:46, Gerry Gagnon at 19:11 and Sean Black a 19:13, respectively.
The Huskies next went 7, 8, 9 led by Tyler Scarborough's 19:16 then Gavin Stigall (19:30) and Jacob Lopes (19:32) with Tiverton's Magnus Casperson 10th in 19:32 and EP's Daniel Lukusa 11th at 19:56. Mt. Hope's Jackson Lopes was the fifth and last counting runner for Huskies in 12th at 20:05.
The Townies' fifth and final scorer was Gus Belanger in 14th at 20:23 with mate Deacon McShane a second behind in 15th. Mt. Hope's Dylan Shaw was 13th in 20:21. He like McShane did not count in the scoring.
East Providence saw its record move to 2-2-1 with the decisions.
Of the rare draw with Mt. Hope, EPHS boys' head coach Bob Lyons noted, "That's an improvement. They've beat us the last few years. Our division on the boys' side is tough. It's pretty stacked."
Girls' notes
The EPHS girls' harriers also beat PCD, but lost to Mt. Hope and Bay View. The Townies were missing seven runners due to illness. Kathryn Patalano led the locals in sixth place with a personal best time of 24:11.
Melany Sotomayor was next in seventh place also with a PR of 24:36. Abigail Beatrice ran 14th in 25:42, Caitlin Chiong 22nd with a PR of 29:38 and Sophie Olive 24th with a PR of 32:53.
Of note as well, Lia Urena, whose time did not count, still made an impressive improvement by shaving four minutes off her time from the Townies' meet last meet.
Up next
The Townies return to Tiverton, Tuesday, Sept. 24, with Barrington and St. Raphael, for their next Metro meet starting at 4:30 p.m.
