PROVIDENCE — East Providence High School super sophomore Nazarae Phillip led city-based sides in the girls’ Sullivan Division indoor track and field championship meet held Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Providence Career and Tech Academy Fieldhouse, the Townies’ standout winning a pair of individual events.

Phillip’s two victories in the sprints helped EPHS finish in a share of fourth place with Chariho, each side compiling 58 points. Moses Brown won the 2023 Sullivan title with 121 points. The other local entrant, St. Mary Academy-Bay View, was second with 82, led by Suraily Sam’s solo triumph in the shot put. And North Smithfield was third with 71.

Phillip, who at the beginning of the indoor season posted a national qualifying time in the 55 meter dash, was tops both in the preliminary round of the sprint last week (7.69 seconds) then raced past the rest of the competition in the final with an even more impressive 7.52. Phillip’s Townie teammate Kandace Daniel was second in the final with a 7.81 after she ran the fifth-fastest qualifying time (7.89).

A bit later, Phillip won her heat and the overall 300 meter title with her time of 44.61, leading a list of scorers loaded with fellow Townies. Kandace Daniel was third in the same heat and overall with a 45.68. And Kendra Daniel won her heat and was fifth overall with a time of 46.87.

Phillip and Kandace Daniel also ran legs of the EPHS 4x200 team that place second (1:51.81) to the winners from Moses Brown (1:51.78). Giselle Raphael and Samantha Clarke ran the other two legs for the Townies.

Clarke and Raphael, as well, were joined by Gladys Barrera and Adriana Perry on another runner-up relay, the 4x4, which again clocked the second best time (4:34.31) in the event to the champion Quakers (4:26.04).

As for the neighboring Bengals, Sam, a senior, bettered the rest in the shot put with her toss of 36 feet, 4.75 inches. Two of her teammates, Sage Verkler (23’8”) and Jillian Nguyen (23’3.5”), finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Nguyen (30’1”) and Jayli Sivels )28’11”) also finished third and fourth in the weight throw.

Also in the field, Amy Papa earned one of her two runner-up results for Bay View, covering 15’11.75” in the long jump. One Exeter-West Greenwich’s Nini Olawuyi was better with a 16’7.” Papa was also second on the track in the 55 meter hurdles (9.44) to winner Bethany Marsella of North Smithfield (8.95).

The Bengals’ other superb runner, Francine Miller, was edged at the line to place second (1:42.48) in the 600 meters and was also third (3:21.25) in the 1,000. Moses Brown’s freshman standout Skyler Maxwell reached the tape just in front of Miller in the 600 (1:42.44).

Two other Bengals earned top six places, Yishan Brady was tied third in the high jump (4’4”) and Sophia DiChiaro was sixth in the 1,500 (5:27.81).
