Get out an old planter, some paper, and a pencil — it’s the perfect time to design a fairy garden! The best part is that this activity can be almost completely free, aside from the expense of the plants and soil.
Materials
Paper and pencil
Planter (the bigger, the better)
Plants
Soil
Rocks, stones, pebbles (optional)
Moss (optional)
Twigs (optional)
Additional items based on the chosen theme
Instructions
1. Plan the garden
Begin by choosing a theme — woodland, beach, desert, mountain, or anything the imagination dreams up. Use paper and a pencil to sketch a rough layout and brainstorm items that can be gathered from nature or around the house.
2. Choose unique plants
Each fairy garden will look different depending on its theme. Once the theme is settled upon, choose plants that represent the theme. Don’t forget moss is a plant too (and it can be collected for free in nature).
3. Gather materials
Collect supplies according to the plan (include any decorative elements that match the theme like paint, lights, seashells …).
4. Assemble the garden
Add soil to the planter and start placing plants and decorations based on the sketch. Let creativity be the guide!
5. Find the perfect spot
Choose a location for the fairy garden — preferably somewhere it can be seen and enjoyed! A porch, windowsill, garden bed, or shady corner all make great options, depending on the plants that have been chosen.
That’s it! The only thing left to do is wait for the fairies to come …
