Townies, Quakers each score first-half goals

EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School girls’ soccer club saw one of its ongoing streaks come to an end, but another continue as the host Townies played Moses Brown to a 1-all draw Wednesday night, Oct. 6, in a matchup of top sides in the Division II ranks.

East Providence’s four-match win streak was stopped by the visiting Quakers, though the Townies remained unbeaten in their last five outings. The tie was also the first of the fall for the locals, who saw their record move to 7-2-1 (22 points) in the D-II standings. Second-place Moses Brown’s mark went to 8-1-2 (26) points at the time. Unbeaten Chariho sat atop the league table at 10-0-0 (30 points).

Jordyn Brogan added to her team-high goal total for EPHS, accounting for the Townies’ lone tally off an assist from Kassidy Martins in the 36th minute of the first half. Moses Brown, however, answered within a minute as Janiya Ocampo netted the only goal for the Quakers on the evening off a pass from Gabi Costano.

Each of the keepers were active. East Providence’s Kaylee Davenport was credited with 10 saves while her counterpart for Moses Brown Elise Kurtis needed to make 13 stops.

The Townies had to have left the pitch a bit disappointed. Though possession was pretty much equally split between the sides all night, East Providence certainly had the better of the quality scoring chances.

In fact, the hosts could quite easily has scored three times in the opening minutes of the game, but couldn’t hit the target. The two other opportunities came off corners. The first from Brogan slid wide of the open far post after a delivery from the left side by Briana Lopes. Another by her strike partner Olivia Williams, a header on the initial corner, missed wide of the near post and bounced out of bounds. The third by Lily Budnick, also a header, could not find the range either, then was hurriedly cleared by the Moses Brown defense.

The Quakers, to be fair, also failed to capitalize on a few very good looks at goal. One for sure came after some miscommunication within the Townies’ defense and another occurred when Davenport mistimed an attempt to punch the ball clear following a Moses Brown corner.

The teams ultimately did score on two pretty plays.

East Providence’s sequence started with a quick pass from Briana Lopes at midfield to Martins on the left wing. Martins then sent a nice through-ball to an on-running Brogan, who settled then chipped it past an oncoming and sliding Kurtis into the open net.

Moses Brown, though, emphatically halted any momentum the hosts may have gained with their goal. Following a clear from their defensive zone, Costano and Ocampo played nice one-touch ball, the latter finishing with a pooch shot from just around the top of the E.P. 18-yard box over Davenport’s head.

The Townies return to action Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Woonsocket against Mount St. Charles. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
