CRANSTON — The lone Townie to qualify of the event, East Providence High School senior Michael Wetmore shared 10th place at the completion of the 2022 Rhode Island Interscholastic League state individual golf championship tournament held over two rounds, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 31 and June 1, at Cranston Country Club.

Wetmore opened with a five-over par score of 76 in his first round, which fantastically included a hole-in-one, so sit in a tie for sixth nine strokes behind first-round leader and reigning state champ Maxwell Jackson of LaSalle, who carded a four-under 67.

Wetmore’s ace came on the par 3, 12th hole. The yardage in round one measured 144 yards. He used a nine iron. It was his third hole-in-one to date.

Wetmore returned to Cranston with 25 other players who made the cut for round two, those who were within 10 strokes of the lead following their opening 18 holes, and carded 77, plus-six round to finish, with two others, with a 153 total, plus 11.

Jackson, just a sophomore, defended his title as he again carded the low round of the day, a 72, en route to winning the state solo championship with a 3-under, 139 total.

Narragansett’s Sebastian Carlsson also shot a 72 in round two to match his first round score and finished in a tie for second with Harry Dessel of Moses Brown at 144 total. Dessel shot 70-74 to also end up at plus 2 for the event.

Barrington’s Ryan Ricci shot rounds of 74-78 to finish at plus 10, 152 and a share seventh place with two competitors. Ricci wound up one shot better than Wetmore as the low finisher from the East Division.

“Michael played well. He was in the hunt for it,” said EPHS head coach Bill McEnery. "Take out maybe three or four bad holes and he was right there with Jackson. I would say he played very well for 32 of the 34 holes.”

It was the second successive top 10 finish for Wetmore, who shared ninth at states in 2021 also at Cranston, shooting an opening round 80 to make the cut on the number, then carding a four-over par 75 to finish with a 155 total. Jackson was one better than his winning total of a year ago when he shot a 2-under, 144 total of matching rounds of 72 over 36 holes.

Team notes
Overall, Jackson also led LaSalle to its fourth ever state team championship and first in 48 years, since 1974, as the Rams carded a two-day total of 605, plus 37. Hendricken was the runner up at plus 56, 624 with Moses Brown in third at plus 61, 629.

Barrington, regular season winners of the East, was also the low team from the division at states in fourth, plus 70, 638. Defending team champ East Greenwich made the cut, the low six squads, finished fifth at plus 71, 639.

Girls’ notes
Morgan MacLeod, Bay View’s decorated senior, placed third two weeks ago in defense of her RIIL state individual girls’ golf title in the event once again held at Warwick Country Club on May 24.

MacLeod, who is headed to Division I Merrimack University in the fall to continue her career, shot an eight over score of 80 to finish four strokes behind the winner, LaSalle’s Olivia Williams who shot a 76, and Barrington’s Lily Dessel, who shot a plus six, 78. Katherine Waldorf was the other Bay View competitor in the field, finishing in solo 15th.
