PORTSMOUTH — Without most of their fans and the Portsmouth High School Marching Band to support them, the Patriots’ varsity football team nevertheless dominated the annual Thanksgiving Day game against their island rival Middletown on a rain-soaked turf field Thursday.
The offense scored four touchdowns and the defense kept the Islanders out of the end zone for a 28-0 win.
After the game, Tristan Conheeny was awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy for Portsmouth. He scored on a short run to give his team a 6-0 lead at halftime. He also scored late in the fourth quarter, scrambling for 22 yards into the end zone.
Joe Sanderson ran the ball in from 14 yards out late in the third quarter, and Jackson Hackley scored on a 2-point conversion to make it 14-0.
After a big red-zone stop by the Patriots’ defense, Portsmouth worked the ball down the field before Adam Conheeny’s 7-yard TD run. After that score, Fabio Muscianisi, an exchange student from Italy, kicked a successful extra point as his teammates chanted his name.
Portsmouth now leads the Thanksgiving Day series against Middletown, 37-20-2.
The Patriots’ last game of the season was also the last ever to be called by Bobb Angel of 1540 AM WADK. A local broadcasting legend, Angel spent more than 50 years as an announcer.
