PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ varsity basketball team’s chances for a Division I title came to a halt Saturday night.

The No. 6-seeded Patriots were defeated by Bishop Hendricken in a quarterfinal matchup played on the road, 65-53.

Portsmouth (16-7) was trying to avenge a 58-47 loss to the No. 3-seeded Hawks (18-6) on Feb. 8, a game also played on the road.

PHS advanced to Saturday’s game by defeating 11th-seeded Shea at home in a preliminary round game on Feb. 18 by a score of 69-45.

The R.I. Interscholastic League’s state tournament begins March 7.
