Patriots beat Cranston West, 60-46, in preliminary game

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ varsity basketball team kept on its winning ways Wednesday night, beating Cranston West in a preliminary Division I contest.

The No. 6-seeded Patriots beat the 11th-seeded Falcons, 60-46, to advance to the quarterfinals against the Ponaganset Chieftains on the road Friday, Feb. 21. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.

Portsmouth led Cranston West at halftime, 33-23. The win was the Patriots’ sixth straight. In fact, the last team to have beaten Portsmouth was the No. 3-seeded Ponaganset, which came away with a convincing 54-30 victory back on Jan. 30.

The Patriots come in with a 13-5 record, compared to the Chieftains at 19-3.
