PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ varsity tennis team has started its season strong with home wins over Narragansett and North Smithfield.
Against the Mariners on Friday, Portsmouth prevailed, 5-2. In the No. 1 singles match, Portsmouth’s Talus Nightingale defeated her opponent, Olivia Lonkart, 6-1, 6-2.
Also winning their singles matches for the Patriots were No. 3 Katherine Deus (6-4, 7-6 over Emma Murphy), and No. 4 Brooke Morrissey (6-1, 7-6 over Marissa Lefoley). Portsmouth’s No. 2 singles player, Dylan O’Connor, was defeated, 6-7, 3-6 by Phoebe Hodnett.
In doubles, the Patriots’ No. 1 team of Abigail Dutra and Emerson O’Connor beat Tabatha Gooding and Brooke Caffrey, 6-3, 6-4.
The PHS No. 3 team of Olivia Christensen and Sophia Faria also won, defeating Xia Yan Stella and Catherine Cindrich, 7-5, 6-4.
Portsmouth’s No. 2 doubles team of Grace Boneu and Aislinn Sullivan lost a tough one to Sam Cronin and Lindsy Maracis, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7.
N. Smithfield shut out
The Patriots were even more impressive in their match against North Smithfield on Monday, winning all seven matches.
In singles, Nightingale defeated Abigail Tremblay, 6-2, 6-1; O’Connor beat Sarah Duffy, 6-1, 6-0; Deus was victorious over Grace Sande, 6-1, 6-1; and Morrissey defeated Rachel Real, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, it was Dutra/O’Connor over Abygail Sevegny and Alivia Verasammy, 6-0, 6-0; Christensen/Faria over Madeline McCauley and Abigale Kelly, 6-0, 6-0; and Kailey Bergeron and Lillian Riordan over Nicole Glennon and Grace Marcotte, 6-0, 6-2.
Upcoming matches
The Patriots were scheduled to play Ponaganset High School on the road on Wednesday, Sept. 15, before returning home to host Prout on Monday, Sept. 20.
The team will then travel to Rogers High School on Thursday, Sept. 23, and then to Captain Stephen Olney Memorial Park for a match against North Providence on Friday, Sept. 24.
