PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ swim team came in 15th among 23 teams in Sunday’s state championship meet at Roger Williams University in Bristol.

The lady Patriots finished with 38 points, with Barrington High winning the girls’ title.

Senior Ella Gilpin came in eighth place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.8, and 10th in the 200-yard freestyle race in 2:05.93. Bella Barber, another senior, took 17th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:15.01.

The girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay team (Gilpin and Barber, along with juniors Mae Marston and Emily Steen), 

came in 11th in a time of 1:51.25.

That same foursome placed 13th in the 200-yard medley relay event in a time of 2:05:48. 

Marc Alcolea Vila, the only boy from PHS who qualified for states, came in eighth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.04 seconds. The senior also placed 14th place in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 53.12 seconds. 

Vila scored 14 points for the Patriots, who did not finish among the top 15 teams.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
