PORTSMOUTH — Landon Roderigues won two events as Portsmouth High’s boys’ indoor track team took second place in the Southern division during Saturday’s Division Championship at Providence Career & Technical Academy.

The Patriots scored 125 points compared to 152 for North Kingstown, which was the top team among the 10 schools in the division.

Roderigues won the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.2 seconds — just 0.11 away from the school record of 8.09 which was set in 2017. He also won the long jump with a best effort of 20 feet, 6.75 inches.

Aidan Chen won the high jump with a best leap of 5 feet, 10 inches, and also ran anchor in helping PHS win the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4:43.93. The other runners were Maciej Tabak, Jackson Fox, and Nikolai Loyola.

“Props to the supporters,” said head coach Shaun Horgan in an e-mail. “I think the entire team was cheering on Aidan from lane three when he ran by.”

Horgan said his team notched 23 personal bests Saturday night. “I’m really pleased to see so many improvements across the board — throws, jumps, distance, etc.,” he said.

Ethan Durant broke the PHS freshman class school record in the weight throw, with 38 feet. “He is now ranked second in the weight throw for freshman in Rhode Island,” said Horgan.

Will Kitzmiller tried the long jump for the first time ever last Thursday, and on Saturday qualified for states with a jump of 20 feet, 3.75 inches — good enough for second place.
