PROVIDENCE — The Portsmouth Patriots varsity football team’s impressive season came to end Friday night at the hands of La Salle Academy, whose offense proved to be too strong as the Rams advanced to the Division I Super Bowl with a 32-7 win.

Portsmouth hung tight early on in the game, tightening the Rams’ lead to 12-7 after Neal Tullson dove into the end zone from the 1-yard line and Andrew Perry added that extra point.

That was the only scoring the Patriots could manage however.

Portsmouth gained 137 yards on the ground on 39 rushes, with Tullson leading his team with 52 rushing yards on eight carries. Marcus Evans gained 41 yards on 14 carries, and quarterback Ben Hurd added another 26 yards on 10 runs.

Hurd also was three-for-seven in passing, for 25 yards.

La Salle will play Bishop Hendricken in the championship game this Saturday, May 8, at Cranston Stadium. Hendricken beat North Kingstown in the other semifinal game.
