Portsmouth’s Morgan Casey wins state title in high jump

Her margin of victory was a full 4 inches

PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High School senior Morgan Casey was crowned state champion in the girls’ high jump at Saturday’s R.I. Indoor Track State Championship held at Providence Career & Technical Academy.

Casey’s best effort of 5 feet, 4 inches was a full 4 inches higher than second-place finisher, Dasani Stewart of Pilgrim.

Casey was the only first-place finisher among either the girls or the boys at the state meet, but several of Portsmouth’s relay squads performed admirably.

The boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Oliver Tibbetts, Nick Spaner, Jackson Fox and Aidan Chen placed fourth with a time of 3:37.46, a season best. They qualified for the New England Championships on March 4 in Boston.

The boys’ 4x200-meter relay squad (Nate DeConto, Nick Spaner, Jackson Fox, and Aidan Chen) came in seventh with a time of 1:36.77, their season’s best.

The boys’ 4x800-meter relay team (Jae Defalco, Sean Gray, Chris Vachon, and Kevin Sullivan) ran the course in 8:48.68, good enough for ninth place.

The girls’ 4x200-meter relay team of Elly Skeels, Emily DeConto, Sonia Staroscik, and Poppy Jelley came in sixth with a time of 1:50.97.

The same girls teamed up for the 4x400-meter relay and also came in sixth place, clocking a time of 4:20.16.

Some other individual results:

• Landon Rodrigues came in 11th in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.49 seconds, and 12th in the long jump with a best leap of 19 feet, 10 inches.

• The Patriots’ Aidan Chen came in seventh place in the boys’ high jump with a best effort of 5 feet, 10 inches. “Aidan had to check out of the high jump competition to run the anchor on the 4x2. He just missed 6 feet with some tired legs,” said the boys’ head coach, Shaun Horgan.

• Maciej Tabak, a sophomore, took seventh place in the boys’ 55-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.44 seconds, a  personal best.

• Nick Spaner ran the boys’ 300-meter dash in 37.32 seconds, good enough for ninth place. “It was a very competitive year for the 300; 12th place this year would have been seventh last year. His time of 37.32 was a new personal record and moves him up to second all time in the 300 for PHS athletes,” said Horgan.

• Allie Kuall, a sophomore, finished the girls’ 3,000-meter run in 10th place with a time of 11:10.38.

• Will Kitzmiller came in 14th place in the boys’ long jump with a best effort of 19 feet, 6.75 inches.

The girls came in 14th place as a team, with Classical High School crowned state champions. The boys placed 13th as a team, as Bishop Hendricken took top honors.
