One person was injured, and several residents were displaced, after a fire broke out at four story apartment/commercial building at 32 Main Road in Tiverton Tuesday evening.

Fire Chief William Bailey said fire fighters received a call at 6:30 p.m. about smoke coming out of an electrical outlet. Tiverton fire fighters, with help from Portsmouth and Fall River, responded to the scene, while fire fighters from Bristol and Little Compton manned Tiverton fire stations. Bailey said the fire was extinguished in about 45 minutes, and fire officials praised one of the tenants, who used a fire extinguisher to combat the flames before help arrived.

“This shows why it’s so important to have working fire extinguishers and know how to use them. Great job to the tenant for acting so quickly,” fire officials wrote.

Chief Bailey said everyone was evacuated safely, though one person was checked at the scene for minor injuries. The apartment building is not currently habitable, and those displaced are being assisted by the Red Cross.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation by the fire marshal and state building inspector. Bailey said it likely started on the second floor before spreading up to the third and fourth floors.
