A Tiverton High School student faces felony charges for allegedly calling in a bomb threat at the school earlier this month, as police continue to investigate the Tuesday, Jan. 10 incident.

The student, 14, was charged Thursday, Jan. 19, with transmitting bomb threats and other similar false reports, and felony conspiracy. The suspect will appear in Rhode Island Family Court at a later date.

Police were notified of the threat at approximately 4 a.m. on Jan. 10. Principal xx told police that she had received a threatening e-mail indicating that bombs had been placed in the school and would detonate at 11 a.m.

Tiverton police contacted state and local fire marshals and the Rhode Island State Bob Squad, and sealed off the building to prevent entry until it was deemed safe. Meanwhile, school officials went to police headquarters to coordinate a response, and told authorities that they did not want to close the school while the threat was being investigated. Officers subsequently made a complete search of the building and found no evidence of a bomb or bombs. After the search concluded, officers stayed at the school for the rest of the school day.

A subsequent investigation produced information that led to the student's arrest. However, the incident remains under investigation by Detective Lieutenant Brendan McKinnon and Detective Sergeant Joshua Pelletier.
