To the editor:

I was in complete agreement with a recent opinion written by Mr. G. Burman concerning the exit of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. That is, until his comparison of the Taliban with the idiotic events at our Capitol on Jan. 6.

The FBI has released its report stating that there was no evidence of a centrally coordinated attack by far-right groups or any incitement by President Trump. There was not a single firearm found among those illegally occupying the Capital that day. Continuing to call this an “insurrection” is completely inaccurate and meant only to serve a political agenda.

The Republican minority had no power to “refuse and reject any investigation into the Trump insurrection” as stated by Mr. Burman.

In addition, it was President Trump who realized, with regard to Afghanistan, “the folly of this venture.” In fact, withdrawal from Afghanistan was very much a part of his election campaign from the beginning! It was his administration that initiated the end of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan by setting up a conditions-based withdrawal. His plan for gradual withdrawal was completely disregarded by President Biden with disastrous results.

It is ridiculous and indeed insulting to those who have differing political views to use the vile oppression of the Taliban as some sort of moral comparison
