Portsmouth High’s Casey wins high jump at state track meet

Kaden Kluth places second in 800-meter run

Morgan Casey was the only East Bay competitor, girl or boy, to win a gold medal at Saturday’s Rhode Island high school outdoor track and field championships at Brown University.

Casey, a Portsmouth High junior, cleared the bar at 5 feet, 8 inches — a full 8 inches above her closest rival.

The boys’ Kaden Kluth took second place in the 800 meters with a new meet record of 1:51.49.

“Kaden had an incredible race,” said head coach Shaun Horgan. “He pulled the entire field out to a blistering pace on the first lap. Devan Kipyego (of St. Raphael Academy) was on his shoulder the entire way, hanging on for a fast race. Kaden continued to push the pace on the back straightaway with Kipyego just a couple strides behind. Going into the final stretch, they were neck and neck. Devan pulled ahead with just 30 meters remaining. Both of their times eclipsed the previous state meet record for that event, making it the fastest 800-meter race in the state championship’s 99-year history.”

Kluth was also part of the boys’ 4x400-meter relay team, along with Jeff Brady, Aiden Chen, and Tom McGraw, which came in second with a time of 3:31.03.

“The 4x4 team continues to shine; I was happy to see them run well,” said Horgan. “The team is made up of three strong seniors in Brady, McGraw, and Kluth, and one phenomenal young freshmen in Aden Chen. They are looking forward to next week and making an attempt at our school record of 3:26.”

Colby Fahrney placed fourth in the long jump with a best leap of 21 feet, 6 inches.

“Colby had a couple hairline fouls in the long jump that were outstanding jumps,” Horgan said. “I'm confident he'll make the needed corrections and come back at the New England Championships with a good showing. He's extremely fit and explosive at this point in the season; there are still some big jumps in him.”

As a team, the PHS boys placed 12th, with 20 points. La Salle Academy took the state team crown with 79 points.

In addition to Casey’s performance, Ellie Skeels and Kitty Damon came in sixth and eighth place in the 400-meter dash with times of 1:00.42 and 1:00.90, respectively.

The PHS girls placed 15th as a team, with 12 points. La Salle also won the girls’ team title, with 91 points.
