PORTSMOUTH — A local man has been indicted on four counts of first-degree sexual assault.

The Statewide Grand Jury returned the indictment against Spencer Freeman, 23, on May 24.

The alleged acts occurred in Portsmouth sometime between March 1 and March 31, 2019. The Portsmouth Police Department conducted the investigation.

Mr. Freeman was arrested at his home, 1541 East Main Road, Apt. H101, on May 26 on a Superior Court bench warrant, according to police.

The indictment was unsealed in Newport County Superior Court the following day, and the defendant was arraigned on the sexual assault charges.

An indictment, information, or complaint is merely an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
