PORTSMOUTH — A 44-year-old Fall River man was arrested on drug charges last week after a large quantity of suspected crack cocaine was found in his vehicle, police said.

While on patrol in the area of the park-and-ride on Boyd’s Lane at about 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, officers observed a driver who was not wearing a seatbelt and following a vehicle in front of him too closely, police said.

After the vehicle was pulled over, the passenger was found to have an active arrest warrant, and was in possession of a large quantity of suspected crack cocaine, according to police.

The passenger, however, told officers that the driver, Leonard G. Baskin, of 201 Wade St., Apt. 2, had provided him with the narcotics “to hold on to,” police said.

Baskin was operating a rental car and was in possession of a large quantity of U.S. currency as well as multiple cell phones, according to police.

A search of the vehicle yielded multiple small, ripped bags used to package narcotics, police said.

Baskin was charged with the manufacture/possession/delivery of a controlled substance. He was held at the police station pending his arraignment, police said.
