Portsmouth Police: Man violated no-contact order twice in same night

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — A 22-year-old Warwick man was charged with violating a no-contact order twice against the same woman on the same night — the second time while he was in police custody.

At around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, police pulled a vehicle over on West Main Road at Freeborn Street because a brake light was not working.

During a routine records check, police learned that the driver, Robert J. Curley, of 67 Greenpost Lane, had an active no-contact order with the passenger in the vehicle, a 25-year-old Bristol woman.

After being taken to the police station, Mr. Curley was offered a phone call and accepted. According to police, Mr. Curley then called the same protected party of the no-contact order, leading to the second charge.

Mr. Curley was also charged with driving without an active license, his first offense. He was held overnight pending transport to the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, police said.

Here are some other recent highlights from the Portsmouth Police report:

Charles P. Chavis, 53, of 43 Lottie Drive, Riverside, was charged with violating a no-contact order after being pulled over for a traffic stop on East Main Road shortly after 6 p.m. During a records check, officers learned there was an active no-contact order between Mr. Chavis and a passenger, a 43-year-old West Warwick woman. He was also charged with driving without an active license (first offense).

Dana L. Rondon, 43, of 240 Coit Ave., West Warwick, was charged with obstructing an officer in execution of duty following a motor vehicle stop on Woodland Drive shortly after 6 p.m. According to police, Ms. Rondon provided officers a false name and date of birth, but she was positively identified via her driver’s license.

Wednesday, May 26

Gregory T. Popovici, 25, of 16 John St., was arrested around 1:25 a.m. after police responded to an Ormerod Avenue address to investigate a report of two people arguing loudly outside. According to police, Mr. Popovici was the primary aggressor during an argument with a 21-year-old Portsmouth woman with whom he has a domestic relationship. Police said he had destroyed the victim’s cell phone, threatened physical force against her, and threw items belonging to her throughout her bedroom. Mr. Popovoci was charged with domestic assault, domestic vandalism with malicious injury to property, and domestic disorderly conduct.

Spencer R. Freeman, 23, of 1541 East Main Road, Apt. H101, was arrested at his home around 8 p.m. on a Superior Court bench warrant. He was held pending his transport to District Court.

Tiffanie M. Ruiz, 34, of 280 Public St., Providence, was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after police responded to Ray’s Towing, 1970 East Main Road, to investigate a report of an intoxicated person. When they arrived, police said they found Ms. Ruiz, who showed signs of intoxication. She was there to pick up her vehicle, but was in no condition to drive, according to police. Ms. Ruiz “began to yell and scream in the rear parking lot, causing a disturbance to patrons of Ray’s and neighboring businesses,” according to police. While she was being placed under arrest, Ms. Ruiz attempted to pull away from officers several times and refused to walk to the cruiser, police said. She was issued a 2nd District Court summons and later released from custody.

Brandon M. Togbay, 18, of 30 Linda Ave., was charged with underage possession of alcohol shortly before 9 p.m. Police said that around that time, officers were on a stationary traffic post in the area of West Main Road at Melville School when they saw a southbound vehicle with a rear license plate that was not illuminated. They stopped the vehicle at Mobil Xxtra Mart, where they found Mr. Togbay with an open alcoholic beverage, according to police. He was issued a District Court summons and released from the scene.

Staab, 27, of 300 Sea Meadow Drive, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense), and resisting arrest, after police responded around 3:30 a.m. to the area of New England Boatworks, 1 Lagoon Road, to investigate a report of an intoxicated man who was refusing to leave the area. When they arrived, Mr. Staab exited the driver’s side of his vehicle and walked over to officers with a “staggered” gait, police said. He resisted when police attempted to place him under arrest, according to police. Mr. Staab was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.
