PORTSMOUTH — Eighty collegiate rugby teams battled it out over the weekend at Glen Farm during the 37th annual Beast of the East.

As they do every year, the players/bruisers kept Portsmouth’s EMTs busy during the two-day tournament, during which bumps, contusions and more serious injuries are commonplace.

Rhode Island fielded teams of men and women from Roger Williams University, Salve Regina, Providence College, Johnson & Wales, and the University of Rhode Island.

Said to be the largest college rugby tournament in the world, The Beast is hosted by Providence Rugby Football Club with matches happening simultaneously on six different fields.
