Miss Charity pageant raises money for the Jimmy Fund
On Thursday night, Dec. 6, friends, family, and faculty gathered at Mt. Hope High School to crown Miss Charity, from a field of nine contestants. The third annual event was begun as a DECA project for students Maddy Rodrigues and Sierra Maturi, now seniors.
Proceeds raised in sponsorships were donated to the Jimmy Fund’s Holiday Patient Assistance Program, which provides gift cards to help Dana Farber patients and their families. Door and raffle proceeds went to support the Mt. Hope DECA chapter’s conference expenses. In total, the event netted about $2,000.
DECA, one of the most popular clubs on campus, prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. At Mt. Hope, the club serves as the face of the student body, volunteering at school events, running fundraisers, and operating the school store. About 20 DECA members volunteered to pull off the show on pageant night, working behind the scenes.
Hosted by seniors Sarah Withers and Sloan Simpson along with Lily Barker, Miss Charity 2018, the event included a talent from each contestant along with a question and answer segment.
Contestants included Colby Dagwan-Santos, Abigail Golden, Annie Krzywicki, Pamela Peters, Reese Pavao, Victoria Silva, Molly Thibaudeau, Hope Tyska, and Margaret Williams.
They were judged by a five-member panel which included Principal Deborah DiBiase, Superintendent Jonathan Brice, and faculty members Gerard Spence, Elizabeth Johnson, and Denise Cotta-Fontana.
For the talent segment, eventual winner Annie Krzywicki, a junior, sang “The Christmas Song.” First runner-up Colby Dagwan-Santos, a senior, also sang, while second runner-up junior Hope Tyska, a Mt. Hope all-time record-holding runner, did “the only thing I know how to do,” and executed a pacer test on stage. Sophomore Pamela Peters was the third runner-up. Senior Molly Thibaudeau was named Miss Congeniality.
“I was very surprised and honored to be chosen this year,” said Miss Charity 2019, Annie Krzywicki. “I was a little nervous considering all the talent that my peers brought to the stage, but in the end, I was so thankful for the opportunity to represent our school and support such a great cause.”
