EAST PROVIDENCE — The Riverside/East Providence Central Major Baseball Division All-Stars edged their city counterparts from Rumford, 2-0, in a pitchers’ duel at Rumford’s Kimberly Rock Complex Tuesday night, July 13, in the winners bracket final of the District 2 Tournament.

Riverside/E.P. Central advanced to the championship round undefeated for the event, needing just one more win to claim the district title. The final will be played Saturday, July 17, at 5:45 p.m. at a site to still yet to be determined.

Rumford remains alive in the double-elimination format and was scheduled to host Barrington in the losers bracket final Wednesday night, July 14, at 5:45 p.m. Barrington defeated Warren, 7-2, also on July 13 to stay in the event.

The Rumford-Barrington winner advances to the championship round and would need to beat Riverside/E.P. Central twice, including an “if necessary” game Sunday night, July 18, to earn the title.

Riverside/E.P. Central opened the tournament with an 11-0 shutout win over Little Compton, then also handled Newport by an 11-1 score before needing extra innings to better Darlington, 2-1.

Rumford began the event with a 3-1 win over Barrington and was on the good end of a similar 2-0 decision over Warren to reach the winners final.

The Riverside/E.P. Central Major All-Star roster included: Owen Richards, Alex Enright, Aiden Martins, JJ Renaud, Parker Andrews, Chris Charbonneau, Wyatt Andrews, Jose Figueroa, Jake Sousa, Tristan Lawton, Tristan Tysvaer, Josh Shanty and Jaydon Alford.

The Rumford Major All-Star roster included: Cole Beattie, Sean Black, Ryan Chaves, Max Correiro, Beckett Keough, Gerald Gagnon, Will Haggerty, David Murphy, Caleb Neilson, Jack Pawlik, Max Pawlik and Jamison Sydney.

Other scores
The Rumford entry into the Ron Silva 8-10 Minor Division All-Star Tourney, named in honor of the former long-time Riverside Little League president, also reached the winners bracket final portion of the event with a 10-8 win over Bristol and an 11-10 victory over Newport. Rumford hosts Barrington at the Rock Complex Monday, July 19, for a berth in the championship round. First pitch is 5:45 p.m.

The Rumford 15-16 Senior Baseball Stars lost twice to fall out District 2 Tourney play: 15-0 to Barrington and 8-1 to Pineview. Barrington won the district title and was playing in the state tournament hosted by Darlington at Tomlinson Field.

Rumford’s 13-14 Junior Baseball Stars lost to Pineview-Pawtucket in its first game, 9-7. The locals were slated to play a losers bracket contest at Glenlyon Field in city Wednesday night, July 14, against another Pawtucket side, Darlington, at 5:45 p.m.

Rumford will also be fielding a team in the annual Andreozzi Baseball Tournament for players ages 7-9 hosted by Darlington Little League at Slater Park in Pawtucket July 19-31. Teams play three games in pool play before advancing to the playoffs.
